A lightweight tablet can become a noticeably different package after you add the input tools needed for work. Comparing tablet-only specifications is a useful starting point, but it cannot settle which complete setup belongs in your bag.
Start with a consistent baseline
Our four-device shortlist uses manufacturer-listed tablet weights: 464 g for iPad Air 11-inch Wi-Fi, 469 g for Galaxy Tab S11 Wi-Fi, approximately 509 g for HUAWEI MatePad Air, and 686 g for Surface Pro 12-inch. The screen sizes and operating systems differ. These figures are not a like-for-like screen-size test or measurements from our own scale.
A worked example: MatePad Air
Huawei lists approximately 509 g for the tablet and 308 g for its compatible Smart Magnetic Keyboard. Adding the two produces an 817 g subtotal. A pen, charger and any separate protective case must still be added. We do not present that subtotal as a complete travel-kit weight.
The useful calculation is simple: list exactly what goes into your bag, then add those items. Avoid counting an integrated cover twice, and include a charger only when you intend to carry it. Use the same rules for every option.
Why missing figures should stay missing
We have not established a comparable complete-kit weight for every competing configuration. Filling that gap with a different keyboard generation or an estimated pen weight would create false precision. Instead, record the exact accessory model and look for its published weight or weigh the assembled kit yourself.
If you take your own measurements, document the scale, included components and whether cables are included. A photograph of the full kit and a clear item list make the figure easier to interpret and reproduce.
Portability also includes how you hold it
A tablet used without a keyboard on a train has a different comfort requirement from one used on a desk for typing. Consider both modes. A larger screen may make a two-column PDF easier to read while making one-handed use less convenient. There is no single gram threshold that resolves that trade-off for everyone.
The buying decision
Choose the smallest complete setup that can finish your actual tasks. For a reading-heavy routine with regular pen input, MatePad Air is a relevant candidate. For a required desktop workflow, Surface may justify more weight. For established iPadOS or Android apps, compare the Apple and Samsung kits that support those apps.
