Microsoft Surface Pro 12-inch is the option to examine when a Windows requirement shapes the entire purchase. The question is not whether its tablet body is the lightest in this shortlist. It is whether you need the software environment enough to accept the additional weight and accessories.
Why its weight needs context
Microsoft lists a 686 g body weight for the 12-inch model. The keyboard, pen and charger are extra parts of the travel setup. Compared with a smaller tablet used mainly for reading, this is a different proposition: more of the buying decision rests on the work you must finish in Windows.
Windows on Arm needs a compatibility check
The 12-inch Surface Pro uses an Arm-based platform. Windows availability does not guarantee support for every application, plug-in or peripheral driver. List any specialist software, institutional tools, printers or other devices you cannot do without, then confirm support with the software or device provider.
This is particularly important when an accessory needs its own driver. Do not rely on a generic claim that an application can run if your exact workflow depends on an extension or connected device that has not been checked.
Keyboard and handwriting
Use the compatibility list for the dedicated 12-inch keyboard and supported pen. Budget for the configuration you intend to carry rather than the tablet alone. If handwritten notes are a central reason for buying, test the note-taking app and how those notes move into a report. If long typing sessions dominate, also try the setup in the spaces where you will work.
Our recommendation
Compare Surface first when an essential Windows application is non-negotiable and verified to work on this Arm-based model. If reading, handwritten notes and routine documents cover nearly all your mobile work, a lighter tablet platform may be sufficient. That is where MatePad Air, iPad Air and Galaxy Tab S11 remain relevant alternatives.
